Searchlight is losing one of the people most closely associated with its modern awards-marketing identity.

Michelle Hooper is departing after a 20-year run in which she led publicity, awards and creative marketing operations. During that period, Searchlight campaigns generated 21 Best Picture nominations and five wins, with 183 Oscar nominations and 49 wins overall.

That makes this more than executive-move coverage. Specialty-film awards campaigns are built on accumulated relationships, timing instincts, voter feedback and the ability to read when a film's cultural positioning is changing. Hooper was known internally as 'the closer' for her ability to bring those campaigns home in the final stretch.

The immediate question is how much of that capability is institutional and how much is embodied in long-tenured leaders. Searchlight still has the infrastructure, but awards marketing is unusually dependent on judgment accumulated over time.
