Street Fighter’s Casting Won the Conversation. Weekend Two Shows Attention Isn’t Retention.

Street Fighter fell roughly 72% in weekend two after its $31 million opening, showing the limit of a campaign that successfully generated conversation but still depended on the movie to sustain recommendation.

Street Fighter’s unusual casting successfully became part of the campaign. It generated conversation, memes and enough curiosity to support a No. 1 opening weekend.

Weekend two is the harder test. The film fell roughly 72% to about $8.6 million, which turns the case study from an attention story into a retention story.

That does not erase the value of the casting strategy. It shows the boundary between awareness and advocacy: marketing can create the first visit, but sustained theatrical performance depends on what audiences tell one another afterward.

The pattern now looks similar to Other Mommy: strong campaign-level attention, followed by a much weaker hold once the product itself had to carry the next wave.
